Social media use disturbs young Swedes' sleep: Poll

Stockholm: A clear majority of young Swedes used digital devices in bed before going to sleep, with one in three having trouble getting properly rested, a media report said.

A third of respondents aged 15 to 29 said they had trouble sleeping, a poll cited by public broadcaster Swedish Television found, while 82 percent of that group said they use digital devices in bed before going to sleep.

"The very use of social media makes one active. In order to sleep, the brain needs to calm down," Torbjorn Akerstedt, a professor at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, told the channel.

The blue light emitted by screens tricks the body into thinking it is day time, while at the same time suppressing the production of melatonin, a hormone that helps people sleep, the channel reported.

One quarter of the young people polled said they would like to be able to switch off their access to social media during particular hours, Xinhua reported.

Nearly half the young respondents said they are sleeping worse today than five years ago, while 31 percent said they believed social media is disturbing their sleep.

Nearly two thirds said they had trouble concentrating on daily tasks due to a lack of sleep.

Women outnumber men when it comes to Google Search in India

New Delhi: When it comes to Google Search, more and more Indian women across age groups are using the search engine -- outnumbering men by a whooping margin -- on issues ranging from beauty and fashion to health and fitness, the company has revealed.

Middle-aged women in the age group of 35-44 years are spending more time on Google Search, outnumbering the growth of middle-aged men by a whopping 123 percent, the company has revealed.

This is year-on-year (YoY) growth measured in terms of “time spent in minutes” on Google Search, the company said in a statement on Tuesday, citing data sourced from comScore.

“The internet is playing an incredibly important role in changing the lives of women in India. It is great to see how women are taking to the internet in greater numbers and increasing their time spent, even outpacing the time spent by men,” Google said.

Interestingly, the search engine also recorded a significant uptake in search usage by upper middle-aged women (above 55 years).

In 2015, this category outgrew the younger women user base (age group of 15-24 years) and working women (age group of 24-35 years).

In terms of growth in “search minutes,” women outnumber men in younger age-groups as well. In the 15-24 age-group time spent by women grew by 110 percent as compared to 104 percent by men.

In the 25-34 age-group, time spent by women grew by 108 percent as compared to 98 percent by men.

Google also revealed that there are more mothers using Google search when compared to fathers. One in three (33 percent) women who are mothers are on the web while only one in four fathers are on the web.

“This trend is likely to continue growing as India’s vast rural population of over 800 million comes online and experiences the power of the internet,” the company said.

Interestingly, this is not just limited to the fashion and beauty segments.

Women are outpacing men on searches in their fascination for food being three times higher, same is the case with entertainment (family television) and finally two times higher interest even around health and fitness.

India currently holds the world’s third largest internet user base after China and the US with approximately 325 million active users.

Clara Rockmore’s 105th birthday: Google honours theremin virtuoso with an interactive doodle!

New Delhi: Google has done it again. And, this time it’s for Clara Rockmore, a Lithuanian virtuoso performer of the theremin, an electronic musical instrument.

Google on Wednesday celebrated the birthday of Clara Rockmore, who would have turned 105 today had she been alive, with an interactive doodle on its homepage.

Clara, who was trained from a young age as a violinist, ultimately gave up the violin due to physical strain. This led her to discover the theremin, a gesture-controlled instrument named after its inventor, Léon Theremin.

“Not only did Rockmore become the instrument's most well-known performer, she also influenced its development. She convinced Theremin that it should be made more responsive and offer a greater range of notes (5 octaves instead of 3),” wrote Google in a blog post.

For t today's doodle, the creators tactfully translated the movement used to play the theremin - one hand controlling pitch and the other volume -to an interactive module, where a point of light controls volume and pitch.

The Internet search giant also described Clara as ‘the woman who made music from thin air’.

It is said that she was so good at her instrument and her musical mentor, Léon Theremin, became so enamored with Clara that he proposed to her several times but she refused each time.

In 1933, she married attorney Robert Rockmore, and thereafter used his name professionally. Her maiden name was Reisenberg.

She died in New York City on May 10, 1998, at age 87.

Pakistan confirms sharing of intelligence with India on Mahashivaratri terror attacks

Islamabad: Pakistan has confirmed that it had shared intelligence with India on possible terror strikes in Gujarat and other parts of the country on Mahashivaratri festival.

Sartaj Aziz, Pakistan Prime Minister's Advisor on Foreign Affairs, said that the confirmation establishes Islamabad's commitment towards fight against terrorism.

"Sharing of intelligence among various nations of the world is a routine practice and this happens around the world. However, this time it was somehow leaked to media. But this showed Pakistan's commitment to fight terrorism," Mr Aziz said.

According to media reports, Pakistan's National Security Advisor Lieutenant-General Naseer Khan Janjua had passed on the intelligence warning to his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval on Saturday following which the special forces were deployed to Gujarat to back up state police.

The terror alert prompted massive mobilisation of state police personnel and the National Security Guard.

Security was beefed up at prominent temples, markets, railway stations, bus stands, malls, airports and other crowded places across cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Vijayawada, Bhopal and Chandigarh.
